Itungi,Tanzania: A Partner Congregation

ITUNGI, TANZANIA

Como Park Lutheran Church's partner congregation ministry in Tanzania is now long-standing and vibrant.  In recent years, members of Como Park Lutheran Church have traveled to Tanzania three times, funded well drilling projects, parish building programs for churches and homes, provided educational materials for the village primary schools, including books, desks and a pit-latrine.

Most significantly, we currently fund over 63 secondary scholarships, six vocational school scholarships, and nursing and divinity students too.  The vocational scholarship program is a Como Park Lutheran Church pilot program that we hope will become a model for other partner-parish congregations.

We have provided bicycles for the parish evangelists, funds to help pension retired pastors, and we are currently sponsoring agricultural teaching plots to improve village farming techniques.   In all of this we are blessed to be able to join in the ministry of a small village church where without electricity or running water, they are able to envision life and world-changing ministries to bring life and prosperity to their children, village and country.

Crop Notes

Ag Institute of Tumaini University

Mark and Terry Jensen are keeping Como Park Lutheran Church updated on the planting of crops in Itungi (Tanzania). They are working with the village people and have developed a pre-harvesting plan that emphasizes the following:

·        How to prevent the corn crop from being damaged by birds.

·        Continuous weeding to keep weeds from producing seeds.
·        Explanation of how to know when to harvest the crop.

The people have responded positively and have commented that they really appreciated getting good information and knowledge of crop growing. They talked with them about planting a different bean variety next year (since the bean crop did not do well) – they were happy with the corn variety used. Pastor Damian Ngandango was very insistent to people in their congregation to come and observe the work of this plot.

If you would like to see the progress, here is a link that shows pictures of the plots at http://www.flickr.com/photos/21557421
